Gilbert Glenn Brown

When you look at Gilbert Glenn Brown’s resume you’ll catch only a glimpse of this consummate 21st century “Renaissance Man.” A seasoned performer,  a veritable multi-threat with a body of work that crosses several genres: stage, television, screen, voiceover, writing,  directing, producing and director of photography.  Gilbert originated the role of  R&B singer Jett Slade on "The Young & The Restless", recurred as Dean Evan Foley on the Emmy-Winning  “The Inspectors”, appeared along side Taraji P. Henson and  Sam Rockwell in "Best of Enemies" in the pivotal role of Howard Clements. He is presently recurring as James Michael Chapel in  DC's "Stargirl" as Martin Luther King Jr. in the upcoming Aretha Franklin biopic "Respect" with Jennifer Hudson and Forrest Whittaker and will be seen as Dr. Riley in Walter Mosley’s “The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey” with Samuel L. Jackson.

Gilbert has always been creative, whether it was writing and drawing his own comic books, stories and plays. He was born and raised in New York City into a very Jamaican family,  which no doubt formed the foundation of his drive for excellence, his love of music and dry sense of humor.   While in high school, he caught the acting bug on a dare, when the Mind-Builders Creative Art Center’s  touring company , Positive Youth Troupe performed at his high school. This dare proved to be the best gamble of his life… and may have just about saved it. Mind-Builders and Positive Youth Troupe dedication to the empowerment of youth , giving them a voice all through the arts,  gave him the confidence and skills necessary to set his sights on a professional acting career. It instilled in him the value of hardwork, importance of the arts and it’s ability to transform and elevate. He took those skills and continued his education at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he received a BFA.

Gilbert has an immense love and respect for theatre, the stage being where it all began him.  He has been honored to performed  on numerous theaters in New York, California and stages in between.  His vast theatre experience includes noteworthy performances at The Huntington Theatre, Kansas City Rep, Mark Taper Forum, The Garry Marshall Theatre, True Colors Theatre Company, Ebony Repertory Theatre Company,  National Black Theatre Festival, The Walter Inge Festival, The Goodman Theatre, The Apollo Theatre, The Matrix Theatre, The Complex, National Black Theatre, The Vineyard, Classic Stage Company, Playwrights Horizons, The Negro Ensemble and the Fountain Theatre.  His work has also garnered critical acclaim. He has been nominated for an AUDELCO for Best Male Performance in a Musical appearing as MLK Jr., in Leslie Lee & Charles Strouse’s MARTIN: BEFORE THE DREAM., 4 NAACP Theatre Award nominations, along with 2 Los Angeles Drama Critics Awards and  LA Weekly Award and 2 Ovation Nominations for Best Ensemble.

Gilbert also has an extensive list of television and screen credits. Some of his appearances include: “S.W.A.T.” "The Passage", "The Resident", "Valor", "Good Behaviour", “E.R”, “Shark”, “Cold Case”, “Mercy”, “The Shield”, “The OC”, “The Parker’s”, “Roswell” “Dreamgirls”, “The Good Fight, “The Eavesdropper” and his first feature film ”Raising the Heights”.

He has been honored to work along side some of the best in the business, the likes of Taraji P. Henson, Sam Rockwell, Jennifer Hudson, Forest Whittaker, James Woods, Phylicia Rashad, Anika Noni Rose, Alfre Woodard, Michael Chiklis, Peter Gallagher, Hattie Winston, Kene Holliday, Richard Lawson, Dick Gregory and David Caruso, to name a few. 

Additionally, he has several commercial and voice-over and television credits under his belt. He is also the co-creator, producer, writer  and director of the forth-coming web series "All in the Timing".  A producer and writer for the comedy short  “Half Off”, as well as director,  cinematographer on the web series “HTMAST.”  He has also shot and directed two episodes of the  series of shorts "I am Thespis!"

While pursuing his acting career, Gilbert has always managed to stay connected to the education and empowerment of young people and the world through the arts. Whether it's teaching at Columbia College Hollywood, coaching actors, or volunteering his time with afterschool programs in southern Los Angeles, Gilbert loves helping to ignite the creative spark in others. He continues to give back to the same group that first gave him his start, The Positive Youth Troupe as a way of repaying what he received as a young, hopeful artist.
